I don’t understand…

We need to give up some of our freedoms in order to keep democracy alive and preserve our safety.

Much to my dismay, some people actually believe this (as evidenced by a conversation I had recently, from whence I borrowed this quote). It doesn’t seem to matter that “giving up our freedom” is essentially at odds with “keeping democracy alive.”

To anyone that still believes our government is doing the right thing, I’d like to refer you to a much older quote, made by Benjamin Franklin:

Those who would give up Essential Liberty to purchase a little Temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety.

He also wrote in the Poor Richard’s Almanack of 1738 a similar proverb: “Sell not virtue to purchase wealth, nor Liberty to purchase power.”
