I need to make sure that we have good backup coverage. I’ve been looking at several network appliances and seem to have settled on a LaCie Ethernet Disk mini. It has a 400 or 500GB capacity and direct ethernet NIC built in, exactly what I’m looking for, and it looks like it has well-rounded features (including AFP, SMB, FTP and HTTP interfaces). I like the fact that LaCie explicitly lists Linux and Mac as compatible systems.
This should augment the primary server’s RAID configuration reasonably well and give us enough network-based backup capacity to cover our needs. I experimented for a while with remote backup to the server RAID but I don’t think this provides enough redundancy.
There are other Network Attached Storage (NAS) solutions, including models from Maxtor, Adaptec, Simpletech, Iomega and others. The LaCie line seems to have good reviews and a nice, solid enclosure. I’ll post an update after its up and running with details.
